Message from High Commissioner
Dear friend,
Please accept Season's Greetings and my best wishes for a wonderful new year.
2.     2015 has been a landmark year for India and for India Canada relations. India emerged as the fastest growing major economy in the world and also one of the most attractive investment destinations worldwide. For the first time in India, under Prime Minister's Jan DhanYojana,19.8 million new bank accounts were opened (even with zero balance) to bring the under-privileged sections of society into the economic mainstream. It generated CAD 6 billion in fresh deposits. This will enable the government to directly transfer cash subsidies and economic assistance to the beneficiaries.
3.     Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid an official visit to Canada in April last year, when bilateral relations were elevated to the level of Strategic Partnership and a number of agreements to deepen cooperation in key areas, like education and energy, were concluded. The first consignment of uranium from Cameco has already reached India, which is vital to India's quest for energy security. We are also actively negotiating a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) and a Bilateral Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (BIPPA)to deepen economic engagement.
4.     As promised by the Prime Minister, 10-year multiple-entry business and tourist visa, as well as, eTV (Electronic Travel Visa) havesince been made available to Canadian nationals, to further enhance people-to-people exchanges. It is heartening to see the 1.2 million strong Indo-Canadian community playing an active role in political, business, academic and social spheres. Nineteen Indo-Canadians were elected to the Parliament in the recent federal elections. Four of them hold important cabinet berths.
5.    Prime Minister Modi had a good meeting with Mr. Justin Trudeau, in April 2015. He called Prime Minister (designate) Trudeau in October to congratulate him on his historic victory and extended an invitation to him and his spouse to pay an early official visit to India. During the year, we expect continued high level bilateral engagement in diverse areas, to maintain the momentum in our relations.
6.     As always, the High Commission, as well as, the Consulates General of India in Toronto and Vancouver stand ready to be of any assistance to members of the Indian community and friends of India. I invite you to regularly visit our active website (www.hciottawa.ca) which is a good source of information and includes the contact particulars of all key officials of the High Commission.
With all good wishes
(Vishnu Prakash)
