Introduction To Bollywood

Mumbai is home to the largest film Industry- Bollywood, a hundred and fourteen year old industry, making India one of the largest film producing nations of the world. The industry has today grown to mammoth proportions and immense popularity. And it is slowly making its way across continents to endear itself to film lovers worldwide. Starting with silent cinema and graduating to talkies, each generation in Bollywood has created its own share of luminaries and setting its own standards.

Over the decades, Bollywood has spawned many legends, actors and directors, musicians, choreographers, cinematographers, and in almost every aspect of film making. Today, India proudly boasts of Oscar award winners in the music whiz AR Rehman and the sound editor of the film Slumdog Millionaire.

Living legends like Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan and ex Miss World Aishwarya Rai have made it to the famous Madame Tussaud’s Gallery as well.  Directors like Raj Kapoor and Yash Chopra took India across the seas with their films, popular in many countries.

Providing employment to lakhs of people in the 1000 plus films being churned out annually, Bollywood is the third largest revenue earner for the country. 14 million Bollywood movie tickets are sold everyday, and amounting to six billion annual viewers for Bollywood cinema, also creating multiple industries with awards functions, magazines, merchandise, turning this into a multi- million dollar enterprise and making demi-gods of their stars. The ceaseless effort in this creative struggle is a need to continuously make the world aware of the success of its films, the actors, and immortalize themselves in those moments on screen.
