ABOUT TANUSREE SHANKAR’S DANCE TROUPE

Dancer and choreographer TANUSREE SHANKAR is the Artistic Director of Tanusree Shankar’s Dance Troupe in Kolkata. Based on the creative style, pioneered by the legendary dancer Uday Shankar, Tanusree has developed a kind of choreography known as “New Dance” which is creative and contemporary. The dances, set to the vibrant music of visionary artiste Ananda Shankar and others, are presented in a theatrical manner to reach out to audiences worldwide. The dances are a perfect blend of the rich Indian traditions and the more open outlook of the west – they are Indian in spirit, modern in presentation and universal in appeal.

The members of Tanusree Shankar’s Dance Troupe are accomplished dancers having performed both in India and in more than 40 countries. They have performed in many prestigious festivals, including Middfest International in U.S.A., the Womad Festival in U.K. & Canary Islands, and the Edinburgh International Fringe Festival in U.K. The dancers have participated in residencies, conducted by renowned international dancers and choreographers, like Jacqulyn Buglisi, Andre Tyson, Janet Kaylo, Jaan Freeman and more recently, Margaret Jenkins.

INDIAN DANCE CREATIONS

Indian Dance Creations is a modern interpretation of the cultural diversity and richness that India has in the world of dance. The dances choreographed by Mrs. Tanusree Shankar are based on the technique of New Dance, following the path shown by Uday Shankar, the pioneer who popularized Indian dance and music all over the world since 1920. This particular style has its roots deep in the spirit of India. The dances are presented in a theatrical manner to please audiences all over the world. No number is based on any pure classical or authentic rigid style of dance – they are all creative, set to melodies by the pioneer of the World Music - ANANDA SHANKAR.

The show is Indian in origin and spirit, modern in presentation, universal and timeless in appeal.

KARTIKEYA

This evening’s first presentation is Kartikeya, which is an excerpt from Kalpana, one of the most popular dances of Uday Shankar and Amala Shankar

DURGA VANDANA

Devi Durga, the supremely radiant Goddess in Hindu mythology is the embodiment of the creative feminine force – shakti. She is the Mother of the universe; the power behind creation, preservation and destruction. Through this presentation we showcase the various manifestations of the Goddess which is celebrated with great fervour in Bengal. Choreographed by Tanusree Shankar, the music has been scored by Asit Desai.

WRISHYA VIHAR

This presentation takes us to the sylvan forest where the deer live peacefully. They, like humans are social creatures who play about in the forest in herds. Their innocence, beauty and playfulness are shattered by the arrival of a group of hunters and poachers. Set to the music of Taufiq Qureshi, we present Wrishya Vihar.
